1. Cracks in the Seawall Cap or Face

Rust-colored stains on a concrete seawall can point to exposed or corroding steel inside the wall or cap.

Spalling means concrete is flaking, breaking, or popping off the surface. In saltwater, that can move faster because salt can speed up corrosion once water reaches embedded metal.

The wall may be rotating because of pressure from the soil, failed tiebacks, anchor problems, poor drainage, or loss of support near the toe. Sometimes the lean is subtle. Sometimes the top of the wall clearly moves toward the canal.

Do not measure this by guessing from one photo. Look along the wall line. Compare sections. Check whether the cap is straight. Notice whether the dock, lift, or pavers nearby have shifted too.

4. Sinkholes, Depressions, or Soft Spots Behind the Wall

You may first notice a low spot in the grass, a soft patch near the cap, sunken pavers, or a hole that keeps coming back after you fill it. That is a red flag.

The dirt is not disappearing. Water is carrying it somewhere.

5. Soil Washing Out Behind the Seawall

Soil washout can start small and get expensive.

Look for missing backfill, sandy deposits near the water side, open seams, gaps between panels, or new depressions after heavy rain or high tides. If soil is washing out, the wall is no longer holding back the yard the way it should.

The cause matters. Water may be moving through a crack. It may be escaping under the wall. It may be pushing through a failed joint. It may be collecting behind the wall because drainage is blocked.

6. Toe Scour Visible at Low Tide

The toe is the bottom edge of the seawall.

Toe scour happens when water removes soil or support near the base. At high water, you may not see it. At low tide, gaps, undercut areas, exposed panel bottoms, or missing support can become visible.

In plain English: the wall may be losing its footing.

Do not climb around an unstable wall or step into soft mud to inspect it yourself. Take safe photos from the yard, dock, or another stable area.

7. Water Seepage, Pooling, or Clogged Weep Holes

Water pressure behind a seawall is called hydrostatic pressure. It is one of the quiet reasons walls crack, lean, and move.

Weep holes help relieve that pressure by letting water drain through the wall. When weep holes clog, pressure can build behind the wall. That pressure pushes on the structure day after day.
